Antique Bar offers friendly atmosphere

July 28, 2000 - Get your fill of eye and ear candy at That's It Antique Bar in downtown Melbourne.

As its name lends, the bar is full of antiques - on the walls, on the tables and at the bar.

According to Anneli Zepka, co-owner of the establishment, she decorated the bar hoping to make it interesting to look at.

Glancing around at the items adorning the bar also is a great way to avoid eye contact with "unsavory" types.

When I walked in to the bar at 9:05 p.m., I knew I was in for a musical treat. Luckily, I grabbed the last seat available in the bar. More people filed in after me, and they ended up standing wherever space permitted. (Sheesh, usually there's no problem finding a seat at any bar that early in the evening.)

The entertainment for the night was the blues band The Syndicators. O-o-o-o, are those guys smooth! They are the best blues band I have heard in a long time. I highly recommend getting out to see these fine, talented fellows.

From its song selection of classic blues tunes to its loose, blues style, the five-member band really felt the music. A special treat was an extended version of "Route 66," which ended in an impromptu jam session.

I wasn't the only one getting into the music. The patrons of the bar also were enraptured with the band. The folks listening to the Syndicators hooted, hollered and exploded with applause after every song.

One prevalent factor among the people at the bar was that they were laid back. And when people are laid back, it makes them more approachable. I bumped into some of the friendliest, and interesting, folks there.

Smooth tunes, beautiful furnishings and lovely people make That's It a great place to kick back and let loose. The only negative aspect I could find was that the bar serves only beer and wine. But I got over it quickly.

That's It Antique Bar is at 1902 Municipal Lane in Melbourne. Call 768-1431.
